The Moleskine Foundation was launched as a non-profit organisation in 2017, with the mission of pursuing ‘Creativity for Social Change’. Its purpose is to inspire, encourage and connect young people to transform themselves and their communities through creativity. This is achieved by providing unconventional educational tools and cultural experiences that help foster critical thinking, creativity, life-long learning and a changemaking attitude. A central belief is that creativity is key to producing positive change in society, reducing inequalities and driving a collective future. History The original Moleskine notebook was inspired by the legendary notebooks used by artists and thinkers such as Vincent Van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Ernest Hemingway and Bruce Chatwin, over the past two centuries. In his book The Songlines, Chatwin tells the story of a little, black, hard-bound notebook manufactured by a small family-owned company in the French city of Tours. When the company went out of business in 1986, the owner of the stationery shop in Paris, where Chatwin usually purchased his notebooks, commented, “Le vrai moleskine n’est plus.” This translates to “The real moleskine is gone.” Chatwin set about buying up all the notebooks that he could find before returning to Australia, where he had previously gained the inspiration for writing The Songlines. He concluded that there were just not enough of these prized notebooks. A decade later, the small Milanese publisher, Modo & Modo, together with Maria Sebregondi, the co-founder of Moleskine, brought the original notebook back to life and established the Moleskine® trademark. Moleskine Srl was listed on the Italian Stock Exchange in 2013 but was acquired and delisted by D’Ieteren at the end of 2016. Today, Moleskine has around 400 employees and a vast network of partners. From its home in Italy, the brand can now be found in Europe, Asia and North America. Product Moleskine offers a range of objects that inspire imaginations and fuel creative practice. This encompasses notebooks, journals, bags, luggage, apps, writing instruments and reading accessories that complement each other in form and function. The much-celebrated classic notebook is always the core product and best seller. Moleskine has developed a digital offering that complements its traditional range. The Moleskine Smart Writing Set is designed to amplify the note-taking process by combining the power of technology with the instinctive feel of exploring ideas on paper.
