History In 1890, Solomon Marshall founded a quarrying company in the Yorkshire town of Halifax with the philosophy of contributing to the community in which he lived and worked. The business endeavoured to provide superior and innovative products to its customers, with a focus on quality and safety. These were the foundations for a limited company, called Marshalls and Sons, being formed in 1904. The business grew and in 1947, a second production site was opened to manufacture lintels, steps and fence posts. During the 1950s, Marshalls began creating bespoke wet presses before an in-house testing laboratory was created in 1961. Following on from this investment, Marshalls became a plc in 1964, with shares quoted on the London Stock Exchange. The 1970s saw a continued focus on new product development. Marshalls introduced block paving to the UK, which remains a popular choice for residential driveways today. Marshalls has broadened its portfolio in recent years, to offer a wider range of building materials, by acquiring businesses such as Edenhall and CPM. The most recent acquisition was Marley, a leading pitched roof and in-roof solar specialist, in 2022.
