History In 1854, James Howden founded a marine engineering firm in Glasgow, Scotland. The business grew and in 1882, Howden developed a Forced Draft system which could increase a ship’s engine power by 3% and reduce coal consumption by almost 50%. By the end of the decade, more than 1,000 boilers had been built or adapted to the Howden Forced Draught system. Howden began manufacturing steam turbines for use in power generation in 1904. Then, in 1934, Howden became the first company to commercialise screw compressor technology. Fast forward to 2006 and Howden developed a submerged gas circulator for handling helium as a nuclear reactor core coolant.
