Achievements Hoover has been shaping the way we clean, cook and live for over a century. The Hoover name isn’t just part of the home – it’s part of our everyday language, with ‘hoovering’ synonymous with vacuuming across the UK. In the UK, Hoover continues to set the benchmark for performance and innovation across both floorcare and major domestic appliances. Recognised by trusted consumer champions like Which? and Good Housekeeping, Hoover has built a reputation for delivering reliable, high-quality solutions tailored to modern life. Most recently, Hoover’s cutting-edge HF9 cordless vacuum cleaner with Anti-Twist™ technology took home the Best Floorcare Product Award at the Innovative Electrical Retailing (IER) Awards. With over 28 years of industry prestige, the IER Awards remain the gold standard for excellence in electrical retailing. History Hoover’s innovation story didn’t start there. It began in 1908 with a humble, homemade device – a box, a fan, a broomstick and a silk pillowcase. Invented by James Spangler, the idea was born from necessity: his asthma was aggravated by dust in the workplace. Seeing its potential, he sent it to his cousin, Susan Hoover, who showed it to her entrepreneurial husband, William Hoover. Inspired, William bought the patent and launched what would become The Hoover Company. Fast-forward to 1926, Hoover introduced the world’s first electric upright vacuum cleaner. By 1946, it was producing cylinder vacuum cleaners – and dominating households on both sides of the Atlantic. In the UK, Hoover became a byword for vacuuming itself, securing a place in language as well as in the home. The Hoover brand’s ambition didn’t stop with floorcare. In 1948, Hoover expanded into major domestic appliances, pioneering innovations across washing, refrigeration and cooking. In 2015, it became the first manufacturer in the UK to launch a full range of wifi-connected kitchen appliances – cementing its status as a leader in smart home tech. Then came the AXI collection in 2018, combining AI and connected intelligence for seamless home management. In a worldfirst, Hoover followed this in 2019 with the H-KEEPHEAT oven – a revolutionary appliance that can cook and preserve food, marking a bold leap into food science-led innovation. In 2020, Hoover passed a major milestone: over one million freestanding appliances sold in just 12 months. The momentum continued
