The Gardens attracts both residents and international visitors. Achievements Opened in 2012, Gardens by the Bay became an iconic symbol of Singapore. In 2014, the Flower Dome was recognised by Guinness World Records as the largest glass greenhouse in the world. In 2015, the Gardens welcomed its 20-millionth visitor, reflecting its growing popularity and success as a horticultural attraction. The Gardens was also awarded the prestigious “Best Attraction Experience” at the Singapore Tourism Awards, affirming its position as a premier destination in the region in 2019. In 2023, the attraction welcomed its 100-millionth visitor and in 2024, Gardens by the Bay was recognized as the top attraction in Asia and the 8th top attraction in the world by Tripadvisor’s 2024 Traveller’s Choice. History In January 2006, an international master plan design competition for Gardens by the Bay attracted over 70 entries from 170 firms across 24 countries, including 35 from Singapore. A public exhibition of the winning designs held at Singapore Botanic Gardens in September 2006 drew over 10,000 visitors, 85% of whom approved the features and 97% expressed interest in visiting the Gardens. Bay South Garden, the first phase of Gardens by the Bay’s development, broke ground in November 2007 and was officially launched on June 29, 2012. As the next phase of the Gardens’ development, the Bay East Garden is being developed in tandem with Singapore’s Founders’ Memorial, which is slated to open in Bay East in 2028.
