It is a commercial company fully owned by Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS), with the mandate to provide ambulance and pre-hospital care services. The concept of E-Plus was born from a tragedy in 2006, when a senior staff of Kenya Red Cross Society was involved in an accident in the upper eastern region of Isiolo County. Kenya Red Cross Society staff had excellent medical coverage that included air evacuation. However, when the insurer was called at the time of the accident they could not respond as it was past 6pm.The only option was to use its own ambulance that was an urban vehicle and not equipped, to drive to Isiolo County. This one event triggered the idea of a basic life support ambulance. However, it took three years for this to be a reality. In 2009, with the help of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the design for a BLS ambulance, adhering to global standards, became a reality. A section of the KRCS senior management team was involved in the process of its design and development. In 2010, E-Plus was launched with the purchase of five state-of-the-art (equipped to international standards) BLS ambulances thus making it the largest privately owned ambulance service provider in Kenya. In February 2016, Emergency Plus Medical Services (E-Plus) launched air evacuation services and has since then carried out several air evacuations across the country. Today, it boasts of a fleet of 128 state-of-the-art ambulances. A staff of over 300, working in different parts of the country. E-Plus provides its services on a commercial basis as well as under corporate social responsibility (CSR), in fulfilment of the mission and mandate of KRCS. PRODUCT When people think of E-Plus they automatically think of state-of-the-art, lifesaving ambulances that are available 24 hours in every part of the country. What they don’t realise, is that in addition to that, E-Plus also provides: first aid kits, training, air evacuations, home based care services, long term contracting for special projects, field support/ escort and most recently, the eDoc platform — a virtual medical consultation platform, as well as an e-Pharmacy where patients can have their prescriptions delivered to their specific locations.
